I grew up on the
prairies in Alberta,
and I can only assume this is where I gained my
appreciation for the sky and wide open spaces. Now that I live
on Canada’s
west
coast, I feel most at peace gazing at the sky from the
rocky shores of Vancouver Island. It’s the rawness
of both these places, my original and adopted homes, that
I appreciate for their beauty and their power. It’s this
emotional response that I want to bring to my work.
From a technical
perspective I work in acrylic on canvas. My normal
practice is to adhere the canvas to a plywood panel. This
type of support gives me the texture of canvas backed by
the hard surface of panel; the best of both worlds. The nature of
acrylic forces me to work quickly in order to achieve the
blending affects that I strive for. Being forced to
work in a fast-paced manner helps me to work more
intuitively, and not to over analyze my process.
